The last club cruise of the year was organised by Breck and Helen, the meeting point was arranged at Providores& Café at Aldgate. Where we had a hearty breakfast. After which 14 Corvettes headed off towards the mighty Murray. We ventured through Mylor, Echunga, Meadows and finally arrived in Goolwa. Where we parked on the grass well away from the wharf, but still managed to attract the adoring public, put more than 3 Corvettes ina parking space and you attract a crowd !. Here we boarded the ‘Oscar W’ a paddler steamer built in 1908 in Echuca by Franz Wallin and named for his son. Powered by a 16 hp, 2cylinder steam engine, she was designed to tow cargo barges up and down the Murray. Like so many other paddle boats the main cargo was wool from the many stations along the river. The SA Government briefly owned her as a service boat for the many ferries, in 2001 she was purchased by the local council. Now operated by ‘the friends of the Oscar W’’ at a grand 105 years of age she still managed to enthral all of us. After the cruise under the bridge and down to the barrage, we headed over the bridge to ‘the landing’ where we had a fabulous lunch |
